Aguadulce comes from the combination of water “agua” and sweet “dulce”. According to some folcks, the name dates back to when the first Spanish settlers arrived in the region and built an artesian well, noticing that the water was sweet, giving the region it´s characteristic name. Aguadulce is also known as the land of the Salt and Sugar, due to the fact that both activities are present in the region on an industrial level, with great extensions of land dedicated to the production of salt and also, it is the headquarters to two of the biggest sugar cane mills in the country. This thriving city located on an vast valley, at approximately 195 kms from Panama city, is the head of the district of the same name, founded October 19, 1848. Although the exact date of the foundation of the city is not known, it is known for a fact, that it happened by the end of the XVIII century, and it was baptized with the name of Saint John Baptist of Aguadulce. Several times throughout it´s history was the head of the Province of Cocle. It is the commercial and industrial center of the Province of Cocle. Has nearly 20,000 inhabitants. It is important to point out that it is the headquarters of the Cocle top baseball team also known as the “Leña Roja” or red firewood.

Museum of the Salt and Sugar

It makes a remembrance of the times since the native indians lived there, and how it evolved with the coming of the new colonists who started producing salt and sugar. For that, they have a Pre-Columbian exhibit, another one dedicated to both the sugar and salt industries. They also have a room for temporary exhibitions and another one for conferences. The museum is located in front of the 19 of October Park. Entrance fee is free and it only opens to the general public from Mondays until Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
